Interview Questions for On Demand Video Interviews Vs Live Interviews

Caroline Chessia | June 8, 2023

Knowing what questions to ask, and when, is a part of being a great recruiter.

It’s also an area we see some complaints about from candidates regarding video interviews. When done correctly, an on demand video interview should function as the screening call – setting the scene for more in depth questions down the line.

The most successful users of video interviews use the pre-recorded on demand interviews to get a feel for their candidates. Then, they use the live video interview (or in-person interview) to dive deeper into their responses. Here are examples from interviewstream users:

Interview Questions For On Demand Interviews

Interview questions for on demand interviews should be similar to screening interview questions. The on demand video interview serves as an alternative to a lengthy phone screen. Ask questions about qualifications, culture fit, and soft skills. Here are a few examples:

  • Can you walk me through your resume and highlight the relevant experiences and skills for this position?
  • What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
  • How do you handle challenging situations or work under pressure?
  • What are your strengths and how do you believe they will contribute to our organization?
  • What do you know about our company and our products/services?

Situational Interview Questions For On Demand Interviews

Using on demand video interviews for situational questions is a common use case for internal candidates. The rating system makes it easy to see how candidates are rated against each other. Good examples of questions to ask include:

  • Can you give an example of a time when you faced a significant challenge or obstacle at work? How did you overcome it?
  • Tell me about a project or task that required you to work effectively as part of a team. How did you contribute to the team’s success?
  • Describe a situation where you had to adapt to a major change in the workplace. How did you handle it and what was the result?
  • Can you share a situation where you took the initiative to improve a process or solve a problem? What steps did you take and what was the outcome?
  • Give an example of a time when you had to deal with ambiguity or uncertainty in a project or task. How did you navigate through it and achieve the desired outcome?

Interview Questions For Live Video Interviews

You should ask in-depth interview questions for live video interviews. They are often the second round interview, which gives you an opportunity to ask for more detail on responses the candidate gave in their screening interview. Some examples are:

  • What sets you apart from other candidates who have applied for this position?
  • How do you envision contributing to our company’s long-term goals and vision?
  • How do you handle feedback and criticism? Can you share an example of a time when you received constructive feedback and implemented it effectively?
  • Can you share an example of a successful project or accomplishment that you’re particularly proud of, and how it positively impacted your team or organization?
