More than half the employees in a new survey say they’re already disenchanted with the jobs they took in 2012. And employers claim one in eight new hires isn’t the right fit.
Why? Companies aren’t giving candidates a clear and balanced picture of the job. In response, video provider InterviewStream has released “About Us,” a new feature to their branded video interview portal that gives candidates a window into the responsibilities of the job and the culture of their prospective employer.
The “About Us” portal includes new branding features where employers can upload custom videos about the company, the community, the position, and a typical day in the life of an employee. Candidates gain a sense of the company’s history and culture, as well as the good and bad qualities of the job, before they commit to an interview.
The welcome screen features the company’s logo and corporate colors, along with four buttons labeled, “Company Overview,” “Community Overview,” “A Day in the Life,” and “Position Overview.”
“About Us” tackles head-on the costly dilemma spelled out in a December 2012 report by HR consulting firm Development Dimensions International. The report – which studied 2,300 newly hired workers and 250 staffing directors in 28 countries – found that 51 percent of new employees hired in 2012 have “buyer’s remorse” and 88 percent are looking to make a change. Their chief complaint: The hiring process failed to paint a realistic or accurate picture of the job.
Employers said they were also disenchanted with hiring decisions: staffing directors cited 14 percent of new employees to be failures, according to the DDI report.
“Employers need to draw a clear picture of the attributes and skills a person needs to succeed in each job they post,” said Randy Bitting, founder and chief innovation officer of InterviewStream. “On the flip side, job-seekers often make hasty decisions – especially if they’ve been out of work for a long time. When you consider the untold time and money wasted by a bad hire, it’s critical that companies tell an honest story about their brand and culture, and there’s no better medium than video.”
